Work Rights & Stay Back

Studying abroad can be a very expensive affair for international students, though Canada is a relatively affordable option. However, without work permit, full time under-graduates and post- graduate students are free to work anywhere on and off the campus for up to 20 hours per week during school terms, and full time 30 hours per week during scheduled brakes like Christmas and summer vacation. The most, on average, a part time student worker would earn between CAD 800 to 1500 CAD a month.
Once the international student files the application for work permit, he/ she is eligible to work as a co-op student or an intern. After graduation, international students studying in recognized colleges or universities for one academic year can apply for work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Programme. This permits students to gain work experience for a maximum of 3 years that would contribute to meeting the eligibility threshold for permanent residence in Canada. Only students who enroll for 2 years full time continuous academic programme are usually given the 3 years stay back.
